Staraptor or Mukuhawk(Japanese), the Predator Pokemon.
Base Stats: HP 85 ATK 120 DEF 70 SATK 50 SDEF 50 SPD 100)
Staraptor, stayed the same for the most part this gen, but got one useful tool.
Reckless. Reckless boosts both of Staraptor's STAB moves, Brave Bird and Double-Edge, by 20%. That on top of STAB, reaches a Base Power of 204. That's nothing to scoff at coming off of 339 attack with Jolly or 372 with Adamant. Top it off with near-perfect coverage, and you've got yourself a top-tier Pokemon.
Now for the set.
Set Name: Choice Item
Staraptor (M) @ Choice Band / Choice Scarf
Trait: Intimidate / Reckless
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) / Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Brave Bird
- Double-Edge
- Close Combat
- U-turn / Quick Attack
This set gets almost perfect coverage, only resisted by Rotom's regular form, which is NU, so in sense, it's perfect coverage.
If running Scarf, use Adamant. If running Band, use Jolly.
The ability really is your choice (terrible pun). Intimidate gives Staraptor more switch-ins, while Reckless gives you more power.
Brave Bird has STAB. Good base power and irreplaceable on Staraptor, just like Double-Edge. Close Combat tops of the coverage, hitting steels and rocks that resist his other STAB moves. U-turn can help scouting, and gets more coverage, but a Brave Bird hits harder than a SE U-turn. Quick Attack can hit boosting sweepers like Cloyster who are at 1HP and can usually KO things in the 25% range. But you don't want to be locked into Quick Attack. So U-turn is your option if you have something to phaze, etc. And Quick Attack is if you have problems with boosting sweepers.
Now for some calcs.
These are Banded.
Against a 252 HP and 252 Def Skarmory: Guaranteed 3HKO with Close Combat. Around 60% chance to 2HKO after rocks.
Against a 252 HP and 252 Def Hippowdon: Guaranteed 2HKO with Brave Bird.
Any Tyranitar sets are OHKO'ed by Close Combat.
Against a 252 HP and 80 Def Eviolite Dusclops: Guarenteed 2HKO with Brave Bird.
Against a 252 HP and 228 Def Dusknoir: 1HKO with Rocks and 3 Layers of Spikes.
Against a 252 HP and 252 Def Cresselia: Guaranteed 2HKO.
Scary stuff. Staraptor too broke.
You can also run a Life Orb set with most of the same stuff, but you have Roost instead of U-turn. And you have to run Jolly.
Staraptor's only true checks are Recoil and Pokemon that can outspeed and KO.
